Why Choose This Damascus Billet?
-
Ready to Work: Pre-flat-ground and acid-pickled — saving you significant prep time versus raw stock.
-
Balanced Performance: Heat treatment is calibrated for optimal edge sharpness AND toughness — the core is harder while the outer layers offer flex.
-
Striking Damascus Pattern: The classic layered grain emerges beautifully after final acid etching — every piece is unique.
-
Versatile Use: Ideal for kitchen knives, hunting knives, EDC folders, and custom gift blades.
-
Customizable: Cut, grind, profile, and finish to your exact design specifications.
How to Use & Finishing Guide
-
Profile the blank to your desired knife shape using an angle grinder or band saw.
-
Polish the steel progressively up to 600-grit or higher — a near-mirror finish (no visible scratches under direct light) gives the best etching results.
-
Acid etch the blade: mix ferric chloride solution at a ratio of 1:4 (solution:water; a range of 1:3 to 1:5 is acceptable depending on desired depth). Submerge for approximately 1 minute at a time, checking progress after each dip. Repeat as needed for a deeper pattern.
-
Neutralize: Rinse immediately with water, then neutralize residual acid using dish soap or detergent.
-
Final finish: Polish lightly, buff, and apply blade oil or wax for long-term protection and to bring out the Damascus pattern.
Note: Both sides of the billet may show slightly different pattern depths due to the forging layering process — this is a natural characteristic of Damascus steel, not a defect.
Important Notes
- Flat grinding removes at least 0.5 mm from each side — factor this into your design dimensions.
- Additional acid cleaning is recommended after final shaping and edge geometry is set.
- When not in use, seal your acid pickling solution tightly to prevent oxidation and evaporation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is VG10 Damascus steel and why is it used for knife blanks?
A: VG10 is a premium Japanese high-carbon stainless steel alloy known for its excellent edge retention and resistance to corrosion. When used as the core in a Damascus sandwich construction, VG10 provides a hard, sharp cutting edge while the surrounding layers add flexibility and the distinctive Damascus layered pattern. This makes VG10 Damascus billets one of the most popular choices for high-quality DIY knife making.
Q: Is this billet ready to use straight out of the package, or does it need further preparation?
A: This billet has been pre-flat-ground and acid-pickled, which saves you significant time compared to raw forged stock. However, you will still need to profile it to your desired knife shape, grind the bevel, refine the edge geometry, do a final polish (600-grit or higher recommended), and perform a final acid etch to fully reveal the Damascus pattern before assembling with a handle.
Q: What hardness level is this billet, and how does that affect performance?
A: This billet is heat-treated to 57–59 HRC using vacuum deep-cooling and heat treatment processes. This hardness range provides an excellent balance — the blade will hold a sharp edge well during use while retaining enough toughness to resist chipping or breaking during demanding tasks.
Q: Are there size tolerances I should account for when planning my knife design?
A: Yes. Due to the forging and cutting process, expect size variations of approximately ±1–3 mm in length and width, and ±0.1–0.2 mm in thickness. Additionally, flat grinding removes at least 0.5 mm from each face of the billet. We recommend measuring your specific piece before finalizing your design template.
