Why Choose This Damascus Billet?
-
Balanced Hardness & Toughness: Heat-treated to ~HRC 58 with intentionally softer edges on both sides for an optimal blend of sharpness and durability.
-
Pre-Processed Surface: Flat ground and acid-cleaned before shipping — the finished surface is approximately 1.5× more refined than an unprocessed billet, saving at least 0.5mm of grinding per side.
-
Stunning Cloud Pattern: The forged sandwich construction creates a natural, flowing cloud/wave Damascus pattern on both faces — every billet is unique.
-
Multiple Size Options: Choose the length and thickness that best fits your blade design.
Size Tolerances — Please Read
Due to the forging and cutting process, minor dimensional tolerances are normal and expected:
- Length & Width: ±1–3mm
- Thickness: ±0.1–0.2mm
- Pattern texture and sticker thickness on each side may vary slightly due to the layered construction.
Acid Pickling Guide
This billet has already undergone a basic acid-cleaning step, but a second round of pickling after shaping and opening is still recommended for best results. Follow these steps:
- Polish the steel surface to 600 grit or higher — ideally to a semi-mirror finish with no visible scratching under light.
- Mix the pickling solution at a 1:4 ratio (acid to water; adjust between 1:3 and 1:5 to suit your material and desired depth).
- Submerge the piece for approximately 1 minute. Repeat in short intervals for deeper pattern revelation.
- Rinse thoroughly with water, then neutralize any remaining surface acid with dish soap or detergent.
- Finish by polishing, buffing, and applying a light coat of oil for protection and maintenance.
-
Important: Always seal the acid solution container tightly when not in use to prevent dissolution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does this Damascus steel billet come ready to shape into a knife?
A: Yes — each Damascus steel billet arrives flat ground and acid-cleaned, giving you a clean, pre-processed surface to begin profiling and grinding. You will still need to grind the blade profile, bevels, and edge, then perform a final acid pickling after shaping to fully reveal the cloud Damascus pattern.
Q: What hardness should I expect from this knife blank bar?
A: The billet is heat-treated via vacuum deep-cooling to approximately HRC 58. This level of hardness is designed to balance edge retention and toughness — the outer layers are intentionally slightly softer to complement the harder core, giving your finished knife blade excellent overall performance.
Q: Can I order a different size than 22×3×0.3cm?
A: Yes. These Damascus steel billets are available in lengths of 15, 16, 20, 22, 25, 30, 35, and 40cm, and in two thickness options (0.3cm and 0.5cm). Please check the variant selector or contact us for the specific size you need for your DIY knife-making project.
Q: Is a second acid pickling step necessary after I shape the knife?
A: Yes, a second pickling is strongly recommended. While the billet has been pre-pickled, grinding and shaping will remove surface layers and expose fresh steel. A final acid treatment after profiling and polishing to at least 600 grit will bring out the full depth and beauty of the cloud Damascus pattern on your finished blade.
